Ports of Call

Rotterdam (Days 1, 8)

Modern Rotterdam is often referred to as a "wonder", because of its amazing Phoenix-like revival after bombs had virtually flattened Rotterdam on May 14, 1940. Highlights are the 180 metres tall Euromast which was built in the record time of 23 days, the impressive sculpture by Osip Zadkine entitled "The Destroyed City" and the town hall resplendent with its embellished facade in the style of the Flemis Neo-Renaissance.

Skjolden (Day 3)

Skjolden is a village in the municipality of Luster in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. It is located at the end of the Lustrafjord, a branch of the Sognefjord. Skjolden is the innermost point of the Sognefjord, and is the length of the Sognefjord is measured from Skjolden to Ytre Sula island where the fjord meets to ocean. The valleys Mørkridsdal and Fortunsdal meet at Skjolden, just west of the Hurrungane mountains.[2] Skjolden is home to about 200 people.[3] The village is located along the Sognefjellsvegen road, about 20 kilometres (12 mi) west of the lake Prestesteinsvatnet and the mountain Fannaråki. Skjolden is about 25 kilometres (16 mi) northeast of the municipal center of Gaupne and about 35 kilometres (22 mi) northeast of Hafslo. North of the village is Breheimen National Park, home of the glaciers Harbardsbreen and Spørteggbreen and the mountain Tverrådalskyrkja.
Attractions & Activities
Welcome to the heart of the Norwegian Fjords. Skjolden is the innermost cruiseport of Norway, located at the head of the longest navigable fjord in the world - Sognefjorden. The approach is via the picturesque Lusterfjord, close to Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier on the European mainland and ends at the foot of the highest mountains in Norway - the Jotunheimen National Park. The fjord is surrounded by several of Norway's major attractions – accessible on short transits!

Sognefjord (Day 3)

Stavanger (Day 4)

With its famous cathedral, Stavanger holds a special place in the heart of most Norwegians. For it was here that the country was first united by the Viking king Harald Harfagre. Modern day Stavanger is the major center of Norways important oil industry and although partly damaged during World War II, much of old Stavanger remains intact. A relaxing stroll along Stavangers narrow, cobblestone streets reveal brightly painted houses and colorful flowers.
Attractions & Activities
Pulpit Rock or Preikestolen (Prekestolen) in Norwegian is one of the areas most profound turist attractions. This natural rock formation with a 25 meter squared plateau stands 604 meters above the sea. Thousands of tourists visit the Rock every year. The trip takes about two hours by foot, but the rock formation can also be enjoyed from the sea by boat.

Kristiansand (Day 5)

The largest and most important port in southeast Norway. A popular shopping area. Kristiansand, city and seaport in southern Norway, on the Skagerrak Strait. It is the seat of Vest-Agder County. Fish products, paper, pulp, and timber are shipped from here, and tourism is important. Kristiansand was founded in 1641 by Christian IV, king of Denmark and Norway. The city became an Episcopal see in 1682. Population (1993 estimate) 67,113.

Oslo (Day 6)

Oslo promotes itself as an outdoors city where the people are friendly and the air and water are clean. It also unashamedly bills itself as Scandinavia's top destination and proudly boasts that its summer climate 'outwarms' all its rivals from home and abroad. In fact its 'niceness' is perhaps the most lasting impression that most visitors take home with them. It's not spectacular and there are other places in Norway that are more exciting, but Oslo is free from the very things that makes staying in most capital cities tedious. It's compact but not too small, it's old but not in decay, it's expensive but there are ways around it and it's welcoming without being in your face. So if you've saved your pennies and want to see a slice of Scandinavian beauty, pack your bags, head to Oslo and enjoy... everyone does.
Attractions & Activities
For a spectacular view of the city and the fjord, visit Akershus Castle. Sitting on a cliff, this fortress was originally built in 1300. The present structure dates mainly from the 17th century and features quaint buildings and beautiful grounds.
